Women take on trade work to help a single mothers provide her children with a safe home with the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build
Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity, a leader in affordable housing solutions, is putting the spotlight on women and girls in construction while helping a family in need with its annual Women’s Build event on Thursday, August 3 at 10:30 a.m. in Appleton at 2322½ West Prospect Avenue (map).
“The Women’s Build is such a great event because it brings together volunteers, sponsors and staff along with the families Habitat works with in the Fox Cities,” explained John Weyenberg, president and CEO of Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity. “This event focuses on highlighting women in the construction field and showcases how much women can bring to the construction trades.”
This year’s Women’s Build is sponsored by Miron Construction and features several days of high school girls building this home alongside Steffanie Mueller and her two children, 17-year-old Oliva and 16-year-old Lamaj, the family who will call this house a home.
“Currently where we live there is water draining into our basement causing mold and our backyard is always flooding,” explained Steffanie Mueller. “I am looking forward to seeing my kids happy and excited to come home each day. As a single mother I know what women can overcome and to know that it’s a group of women and girls helping to build this home for my family, I’m just so honored to be a recipient of this year’s Women’s Build.”
“The Women’s Build celebrates women in the community, but it also showcases what women can do when we come together,” explained Amy McGowan, director of development for Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity. “It’s really exciting to see women and girls of all ages come together and create something so special for their neighbors.”
Families in need are not just given Habitat for Humanity homes. The families who receive these houses must put in the sweat equity to help build their home, learn to maintain it and financially sustain it. The homes Habitat for Humanity builds are not for profit, and the new homeowners are making zero-interest mortgage payments thanks to the supporters of Habitat for Humanity. This is only possible through the efforts of supporters, donors, volunteers and community leaders who believe in the Habitat for Humanity mission to give everyone a decent and affordable place to live.
The Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build is made possible through many generous community sponsors as well as this year’s lead sponsor, Miron Construction.
