Atlas Science Center Celebrates Earth Days on April 27

We can’t wait to see you to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 27 at Atlas Science Center for all ages! Our annual Earth Day celebration brings former and new collaborations to celebrate STEM with an Earth Day twist. Doors open at 11:00 AM and we are happy to host representatives from American Chemical Society, Wisconsin DNR, Ahlstrom Paper, Menominee Tribal Enterprises along with a special guest MsPlanet in our Seed Paper Lab. We will also be handing out 100 White Spruce saplings for guests to plant at home! (1:00 PM until supplies last)

The day begins with American Chemical Society’s hands-on experiments for “Chemists Celebrate Earth Day” in our Sustainable Solutions exhibit. Each activity relates chemistry to Earth Day this year with the theme “Get a Charge Out of Chemistry!” Explore more about how batteries work with “Ice Tray Battery,” “The Great Electron Ripoff” and “Metals: They’re Electrifying!” Learn the impact that chemistry has on keeping our Earth healthy with these walk-up interactive activities all day long!

Atlas will be hosting three special guest Science Live! Stage Show speakers throughout the day for 30 minute interactive science presentations. At 11:30 AM, join Nels Huse from Menominee Tribal Enterprises for a discussion, video and Earth Day giveaways all about sustainable forestry! Dive into the world of plants that takeover by playing “Invasion” with Forest Invasive Plant Specialist Erika Segerson-Mueller from the DNR at 1:00 PM after which 100 White Spruce Saplings will be available for guests to take home courtesy of the DNR and the WI Paper Council. Round out the day with an interactive presentation from Don Guay Ahlstrom Paper Company at 2:30 PM all about how trees can be a part of our sustainable future in more ways that we imagine by transforming them into things like medical devices and even vehicles and airplanes!

Special guest educator and area naturalist MsPlanet (Amanda Zehren) will be hosting our Seed Paper Science Labs. Learn the science behind how paper is made and embed flower seeds into the paper. You can plant the paper at home and watch your flowers grow and bloom! Labs are at 12:15, 1:45 and 3:15 PM.

In between the activities, enjoy an Earth Day themed scavenger hunt that takes you through Atlas and into our Outdoor Learning Center! Finish the hunt and win a prize.
