J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) is pleased to announce the upcoming Exotic Pet Surrender Event, taking place on Saturday, November 16th, from 12 PM to 3 PM at the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, located at 2024 Lakeview Drive, Suamico, WI 54173. This event provides an opportunity for individuals who can no longer care for their exotic pets to safely surrender them—no questions asked.
The event will accept a variety of exotic pets, including fish, invertebrates, reptiles, birds, small mammals, and plants. However, domestic pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and farm animals like goats and pigs will not be accepted. Those with domestic animals are encouraged to contact their local Humane Society for assistance. Additionally, Wisconsin native animals taken from the wild cannot be accepted; please visit the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website for more information on finding a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. For birds, reptiles, and mammals originating from outside Wisconsin, a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection is required.
“We know that sometimes circumstances change, and people may no longer be able to care for their exotic pets. Rather than release these animals into the wild, we want to provide a safe and responsible way for owners to surrender them,” said Renee Schulz, J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue’s Surrender Event Specialist. “Our event aims to prevent harm to both the animals and the local environment, and we’re here to help ensure these pets find the right new home.”
Attendees will also have the chance to meet animal ambassadors and learn about the importance of responsible pet ownership. A photobooth will be available where visitors can take pictures with rescued animals, making this a fun and educational event for all ages.
The event is organized by J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue in collaboration with local partners including the Fox Wolf Watershed Alliance, Winnebago Waterways, and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes.
