The Exotic Pet Surrender Event hosted by J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) at Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve on November 16 was a success, providing much-needed support for pet owners in the region. Between 12 PM and 3 PM, thirteen animals were surrendered, including finches, frogs, turtles, and tortoises. The event offered a safe, judgment-free environment where people could rehome exotic pets they could no longer care for, without worry or questions.
A collaborative effort with area partners like Fox Wolf Watershed Alliance, Winnebago Waterways, and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes, the event underscored the importance of responsible pet ownership and avoiding harmful releases of exotic species into the wild. Such releases can have devastating effects on local ecosystems and are dangerous for the animals involved.
In addition to pet surrenders, visitors had the chance to engage with animal ambassadors, learning more about the care needs of these fascinating creatures, and snapping photos with rescued animals at a special photobooth station.
JRAAR’s efforts and partnerships helped ensure a positive outcome, emphasizing the value of rehoming options for exotic pets like birds, reptiles, and fish, which can be difficult to rehome through traditional shelters.
J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue would like to thank everyone who participated and supported this initiative. For additional information on future events or exotic pet care, please contact John Moyles at [email protected].
