The Oshkosh Herald received nine awards, including second place for General Excellence, in the 2023 Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA) Foundation’s Better Newspaper Contest for non-daily circulation newspapers.

First-place honors went to staff writer Bethanie Gengler in the Localized National Story category on community efforts against human trafficking and to freelance contributor Randy Domer in the Feature Story category for his story about Fernau’s Garden.

Gengler also took second place in the Localized National Story category with a report on public defender shortages. Freelance writer Cheryl Hentz took second place for Health Coverage with a story on potential birth injury dangers.

The Herald took third place for Best Front Page, and former staff writer Kaitlyn Scoville won two third-place honors for General News Story and Local Education Reporting. Gengler also received an honorable mention in Reporting on Local Government with coverage of the county board’s diversity committee.
