Your Busines Advocate: Evers, Legislature, Enact Historic Shared Revenue Agreement

This week, Governor Tony Evers signed bipartisan legislation to increase state payments to local governments, increase K-12 funding, and repeal the personal property tax. This sweeping legislation comes after months of negotiations between the governor’s office, legislature, and local governments.

The agreement provides hundreds of millions of dollars to local governments, as well as dedicating one cent of the five-cent sales tax to funding local governments in the future. If trends continue, the rising sales tax collections will provide increasing dollars to municipalities in years to come. The dollars must be spent on police, fire, EMS, or infrastructure projects. Local governments can still use their own property tax dollars and any federal funds for other line items.

The legislation also increases funding by over $1 billion to K-12 education, including more money for public schools and increasing per pupil payments to students in the School Choice Program and charter schools.
