New North partnership with Mission: Workforce Alliance provides direct access to military pipeline
A new Military Hiring Portal, providing direct access to the highly skilled military talent pipeline, now is available for the use of companies in the New North region to help meet their workforce needs. A talent-attraction tool of New North Inc., the regional marketing and economic development corporation for the 18 counties of Northeast Wisconsin, the portal can be found at https://www.thenewnorth.com/military-hiring-portal/.
The portal is made possible through a partnership with Mission: Workforce Alliance, whose goal is to connect transitioning service members with local business communities to meet their workforce challenges and enhance economic growth.
Businesses in the New North region are able to create a profile in the hiring portal, along with having access to additional resources which will enhance their veteran-ready hiring practices.
The Military Hiring Portal is part of the New North Hires Heroes program, launched on Veterans Day in November 2020. It is a collaboration between New North Inc. and Mission Wisconsin, an organization dedicated to serving the military community by connecting them to professional opportunities, resources and benefits throughout the state. New North Hires Heroes is just one piece of New North’s larger strategy to attract talent to the region.
The goal of the New North Hires Heroes initiative is to provide companies in the region the ability to easily connect with transitioning military-service members, military spouses and veterans for employment opportunities.
“Having this dedicated hiring portal will provide businesses in the New North region with direct access to the highly skilled military talent pipeline,” says Rebecca Deschane, vice president of talent development for New North Inc. “Equally important, these are individuals who have indicated an openness to relocation. Veterans are extolled for their leadership, dedication and technical expertise, and are a good fit for many of the employers.
“From the perspective of the military veteran and his or her family, the New North region is an attractive place to relocate. Our cost-of-living averages 19 percent less than the national average, our average commute times are among the best in the country and Wisconsin is ranked as the number-one state for veteran benefits.”
A wide range of employers in the New North region will find value in use of the Military Hiring Portal. Candidates within the portal possess more than 30 different job skills, including business development, data analysis, engineering, logistics, project management, manufacturing, information technology and human resources.
The new Military Hiring Portal is launching on the heels of military hiring events in Colorado earlier this month, where representatives of New North Hires Heroes and Mission Wisconsin engaged with nearly 800 transitioning service members and spouses.
Over the past three years and 10 months, the New North Hires Heroes initiative has had a profound effect on the Northeast Wisconsin workforce. It has brought 299 total new residents to the New North region: 86 service members, 52 spouses and 161 other family members.
Their influx into the region represents an estimated economic impact of $8.51 million.
Approximately 200,000 men and women transition from U.S. military service to civilian life annually, according to the Transition Assistance Program of the U.S. Department of Labor.
