J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) successfully hosted its latest Exotic Pet Surrender Event on Saturday, April 5th, at the Kimberly Public Library. Over the course of three hours, four animals were safely surrendered, including a turtle, several lizards, and a 20-year-old parrot in need of a new beginning.

These events, designed to provide a compassionate and judgment-free alternative for pet owners who can no longer care for their exotic animals, are part of JRAAR’s ongoing commitment to animal welfare and environmental protection.

“Every animal surrendered today represents a life that won’t be abandoned or released into an ecosystem where it doesn’t belong,” said Macy Yohr, JRAAR’s Invasive Species Specialist. “It’s not just about helping the individual animal—it’s about protecting native wildlife, waterways, and habitats from potential harm.”

The surrendered animals will now undergo a quarantine and observation period before being made available for adoption through JRAAR’s rescue program. These steps ensure the health and safety of each animal while giving them the best chance at a second home.

In addition to pet surrenders, the event included educational displays, photo ops with animal ambassadors, and opportunities for the public to learn more about responsible exotic pet ownership. Representatives from Fox Wolf Watershed AllianceWinnebago Waterways, and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes were also on hand to support community outreach and environmental education.

This event was made possible through the generous support of Petco Love and the Petfinder Foundation.

JRAAR has 29 Exotic Pet Surrender Events planned throughout 2025, giving pet owners across Wisconsin regular access to safe and ethical rehoming options. For dates, locations, and details, visit https://www.jraar.org/exoticpetsurrenderevents
