J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) successfully hosted its Exotic Pet Surrender Event at 976 American Drive, Suite 1, in Neenah. Held from 12 PM to 3 PM, the event provided pet owners with a compassionate, no-questions-asked opportunity to surrender exotic pets they could no longer care for.
In total, 149 animals were surrendered, including a shark, a bearded dragon, turtles, and a remarkable 138 parakeets. The event also offered attendees the chance to meet animal ambassadors and enjoy a photobooth featuring rescued pets, creating a unique and educational experience.
JRAAR Founder John Moyles reflected on the event:
“It’s crucial that pet owners have a safe and humane way to surrender animals they can no longer care for. Events like this help prevent the harmful practice of releasing pets into the wild, which can devastate local ecosystems and isn’t great for the pet. While we’re grateful to have enough resources to care for these animals, the sheer number of parakeets has stretched us thin. We’re asking for support to ensure we can continue helping animals in need.”
The Exotic Pet Surrender Event aims to provide responsible alternatives for pet owners while discouraging the release of exotic animals into the wild, a practice that poses significant risks to local ecosystems. This impactful initiative is made possible through partnerships with Petco Love, the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance, Winnebago Waterways, Pet Advocacy Network, and the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant/Water Resources Institutes.
All surrendered animals will undergo a brief quarantine and evaluation period before becoming available for adoption.
