Appleton Airport granted $2 million for expansion

Officials at Appleton International Airport announce they were granted $2 million from the Wisconsin State Building Commission. The grants are funded through the new Non-State Grant Program and are targeted at bolstering critical infrastructure and services across key sectors.

Appleton Airport Director Abe Weber says the grant will be used to fund the 47,000 square foot expansion at the airport. The project is funded by a combination of state, federal, and regional grants and budgeted dollars.

“This grant is a big boost to the project,” Weber said. “The expansion will more than double the size of our airport and allow us to serve the rapidly growing demand for air service from Appleton.” Outagamie County Executive, Thomas Nelson praised the investment. “The Appleton International Airport is an economic engine for all of eastern Wisconsin. It provides jobs, makes NE Wisconsin an attractive place to live and is a tremendous source of pride for our community,” said Nelson. State Representative Lee Snodgrass (D-Appleton) was instrumental in gaining the grant for the Appleton Airport.

“With close to one million arrivals and departures each year, we know the need is there to meet the growth in travel opportunities for our region,” Snodgras said. “I was happy to advocate on behalf of the grant opportunity and look forward to the many positive impacts this will bring to the businesses and communities in the greater Fox Cities.”

Airport construction is on schedule and the expanded gate area will be enclosed during winter of 2025. Phased completion will start in spring of 2025 and a portion of the project will be operational in time for the 2025 NFL Draft.

According to Weber, all upgrades to the airport will support four main areas: connecting communities in Northeast Wisconsin, inspiring innovation in air travel, environmental stewardship, and delivering exceptional customer experiences.
