HSHS St. Vincent Hospital has achieved recertification as a Baby-Friendly designated birth facility by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc.

Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) – a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for mothers and their babies.

This prestigious designation recognizes birth facilities that offer evidence-based care for mother-baby bonding – including skin-to-skin or kangaroo care, as well as education around best practices and support for mothers in reaching their infant feeding goals. For breastfeeding mothers, Baby-Friendly hospitals follow the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding designed to provide mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

“HSHS St. Vincent Hospital is the only hospital in Green Bay and northeast Wisconsin to be nationally designated as a Baby-Friendly hospital; and we’re proud of that,” said Amber Chibuk, Director of Women and Infant Services for HSHS St. Vincent Hospital. “We know that by practicing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the moms and babies we care for will have a wonderful beginning together and health benefits that will last over the child’s lifetime.”

Chibuk provides more information about Baby-Friendly practices in a series of videos featured on the HSHS St. Vincent Hospital website, which can be viewed by clicking here.

HSHS St. Vincent Hospital first received designation as a Baby-Friendly hospital in 2015. The Baby-Friendly designation is given after a rigorous, on-site survey is completed and maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. There are more than 20,000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide. Currently, there are 592 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States including 11 in the state of Wisconsin.
