2023 WATL/WKTL USA Pro-Am Championships Event Details Announcement

The World Axe Throwing League (WATL) and the World Knife Throwing League (WKTL) will host its first USA Pro-Am Championships from Thursday, November 9 through Sunday, November 12, 2023 at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center in Downtown Appleton.

“WATL/WKTL is so excited to come back to Appleton again. This time we are not only bringing the top axe throwers in the world, but also the top amateurs, who will battle it out to make the main stage on Sunday to be broadcast on ESPN,” said Mike Morton, Commissioner of WATL.

WATL and WKTL are the world’s largest governing bodies of their respective industries. The leagues are comprised of over 350 companies representing venues on every continent and membership of over 20,000 players. Appleton hosted the largest event in WATL/WKTL history, the 2022 World Axe & Knife Throwing Championships last December. The Pro-Am is expected to attract a line-up of over 300 throwers, from 38 states, Canada, and Great Britain competing for $40,000 in prizes.

The Pro-Am will focus on highlighting throwers of various skill levels, marking the first step towards a future with multiple divisions of throwing competition. A total of nine different events will be held during the Pro-Am Championship with the finals of each division broadcast on ESPN.

“We have some incredibly exciting new skills games and new targets to challenge our competitors in every way and in every discipline, and they will compete as teams to crown the best overall in the skills competition. There is so much going on that weekend, we can’t wait for Appleton and the Fox Cities to see Axe Throwing as it has never been seen before!” added Morton.

Throwing kicks off on Thursday, November 9 with the Pro competition starting at 6:00pm. The knife and amateur competitions start at 9:00am and 1:00pm respectively on Friday November 10. On Saturday, November 11, skills competitions begin at 9:00am with the Commissioner’s Cup and the Spicy Duals competition at 5:00pm. The finals will be taped on Sunday, November 12 for broadcast on the ESPN family of networks. Doors open at 10:00am on Sunday with competition starting an hour later.

The general public is encouraged to attend the weekend of events to see the unmatched skill of the best throwers in the world and excitement of intense competition. The throwing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be free and open to the public from 9:00am to roughly 8:00pm. Sunday’s ESPN Finals will be ticketed with a capacity of roughly 400 spectators.

Representatives from the event planning committee will be available to the media virtually from October 26 to November 3. In-person interviews will be held November 8 through November 11.
