Nominations are being accepted for an annual event celebrating some of the Fox Valley’s outstanding volunteers, nonprofit-business partnership and promoting the community’s commitment to volunteerism.

Awards in seven categories will be presented during the 22nd Celebrating Volunteers event, sponsored by the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region and The Post-Crescent May 1, 2019, at the Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley in downtown Appleton.

Nominees must reside in or do the majority of their volunteer work in Outagamie, Calumet, Waupaca or Northern Winnebago counties. The awards include categories for the arts, health care, mentoring, leadership in volunteerism, and business partnerships with the nonprofit sector. For a full list of awards and nomination form, visit celebratevolunteers.org. The deadline for nominations is February 5, 2019.

“This event brings together several hundred people who volunteer their time to ensure the Fox Valley continues to be a thriving community and great place to live,” said Curt Detjen, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region. “We are lucky so many feel that volunteering is a valuable part of their lives, and we honor that community spirit of service with these special awards.”

The event recognizes individuals and businesses that go above and beyond to help make the community a better place with their gifts of time.

“One of the most overlooked aspects of the annual Celebrating Volunteers is the charitable impact of the awards and the generosity of our sponsors,” said Shane Nyman from the Post-Crescent. “The recipients of these awards pay it forward, selecting a local nonprofit to receive a donation on their behalf. The individuals and businesses give so much in terms of time and talent, and it’s wonderful to recognize their efforts with a financial donation as well.”

Awards include $5,000 for charity. The youth award recipient receives $1,000 for charity and a $1,500 scholarship. Since the event started in 1998, award sponsors have given $691,000 to local charities selected by their award recipients.

The award categories are:

  • Business Partnership Award sponsored by SECURA Insurance
  • Youth Scholarship Award sponsored by Community First Credit Union
  • Janet Berry Volunteer of the Year Award sponsored by The Post-Crescent
  • Health Care Award sponsored by Ascension and ThedaCare
  • Walter L. Rugland Community Service Award sponsored by Thrivent Financial
  • Hanns Kretzschmar Award for Excellence in the Arts sponsored by Thrivent Financial
  • Paul & Elaine Groth Mentoring Award sponsored by the Mielke Family Foundation

In addition to The Post-Crescent, media sponsors include NBC26 and WHBY radio.
