Young Musicians Set to Take Part in Educational Rock University Summer Camp

Published Monday, August 7, 2017

On August 7-11, Heid Music is hosting its annual Rock University (Rock U) — a summer camp for students, ages 11 to 18. This weeklong event, now in its ninth year, offers youth an opportunity to interact with peers and instructors in a positive, safe and collaborative environment.

Instructors include local music educators and special-guest Mile of Music artists: Maggie Thorn, RJ Nordlund, The Accords and Leah Witthuhn. In addition, local radio DJs Heather Storm from KISS-FM and Kaytie Fajfar from Razor 94.7 will assist with Rock U events.

“As a platform for music education, Rock U enables our youth to come together for a week of fun and learning. It’s the best of both worlds,” said DeDe Heid, Executive Vice President at Heid Music. “In years past, we have seen our campers not only enhance their musical skills but also develop new friendships, grow as individuals and develop a deeper appreciation for music.”

To participate in Rock U, campers must possess a basic skill level with their instruments — traditional and nontraditional rock instruments — including a minimum of one year of lessons. Skills were showcased at live auditions in mid-July at Heid Music Appleton.

At Rock U, each student will be able to participate in instrument breakout sessions, write an original song, have a custom logo developed and even rehearse as a band. The camp is also designed to encourage social interaction, communication skills and hands-on learning.

Rehearsals culminate in a live rock performance at the end of the week, Friday, August 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Xavier Middle School (2626 N. Oneida St.). As part of the live performance, students also receive rock makeovers and photo sessions, courtesy of Salon Aura and Debbie Daanan Photography, respectively. Media is welcome to attend and cover the event.

Tickets to the August 11 concert are available to the general public for $5 each. All proceeds will benefit the Mile of Music Education Fund to encourage the continued support of the arts and music education in local communities.
