A Wisconsin-based IT consulting firm is being lauded on the global stage by tech giant Microsoft for a mobile platform developed for a grassroots singer-songwriter festival founded in Appleton.
Skyline Technologies, which developed the mobile platform for the Mile of Music festival held annually in downtown Appleton, is being featured in a video presentation at the 2016 Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference underway July 10-14 in Toronto, Canada. The conference brings together more than 15,000 attendees from around the globe for a week of networking and learning. Skyline’s skillful integration of Microsoft products and the company’s close partnership with the growing grassroots music festival were featured in the general session by Mitra Azizirad, General Manager, Cloud App Development and Data, for Microsoft on Tuesday.
Mile of Music, a free, original music festival co-founded by Appleton marketing executive Dave Willems and Appleton/Nashville-based national recording artist and Grammy nominee Cory Chisel, offers music lovers nearly 900 live sets performed by 236 emerging artists from across the US and Canada in more than 70 venues from coffee shops and bars to parks and restaurants, museums and other public spaces. It also offers attendees a chance to join hands-on music education experiences. The 2016 Mile of Music, dubbed “Mile 4,” takes place August 4-7.
“We are extremely proud to be featured at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference,” says Skyline CEO Mitch Weckop. “The recognition and international exposure underscores Skyline’s commitment to developing innovative technologies for our client partners as well as supporting our community in impactful and meaningful ways.”
According to Skyline’s Principal Consultant John Ptacek, the Skyline app development team collaborated with festival organizers to identify the most effective features of an app that would serve not only as an information resource, but also a valuable wayfinding tool for attendees. The app is designed to offer real-time information on artists, performances, venues and other highlights of the festival, as well as to allow organizers to monitor crowd movement and patterns. It has been built with Xamarin and released for iOS, Android and Windows. The strong partner relationship with Xamarin – now owned by Microsoft – was key to Skyline’s application being highlighted at the global conference, since the platform exemplifies a broad set of technologies pulled together for an effective overall solution.
New features added to this year’s version include push notifications to provide the most current information during the festival, e-commerce integration for purchasing festival merchandise, and real time GPS tracking of the Mile of Music bus showing its movement along the route and who is performing on it. Other features were added to capture data and improve serviceability that is extremely helpful to event organizers, including low power Bluetooth sensor technology, to provide organizers an idea of attendance patterns and density within the festival area. This information gave the Mile of Music team valuable insights to help with traffic flow and leverage social media to promote specific venues.
“The challenges associated with organizing such an extensive festival – and keep it running smoothly – are immense,” says Willems. “We turned to Skyline to develop a user-friendly tool to help attendees get the most from their Mile of Music experience.
“Being an active member of our local community is ingrained in the Skyline culture, of who we are as a company,” says Kevin Wirth, Vice President of Professional and Advisory Services. “Our partnership with Mile of Music was the perfect combination of technological solutions and community engagement. We’re proud of our partnership with both Microsoft and Mile of Music.”
