Appleton Housing Authority Partners with SECURA Insurance to Help Make Homeownership a Reality for SECURA Employees

The Appleton Housing Authority (AHA) partners with SECURA Insurance to help make first-time homeownership an attainable dream for SECURA employees. In honor of June as National Homeownership Month, AHA and SECURA are joining forces to share how the Employer Assisted Housing (EAH) Program works as a model for how other area companies can help their employees to also achieve their goals of owning a home.

     SECURA first started its EAH Program with the AHA in 2014, and over the past two years, 16 of its employees have successfully purchased their first home utilizing the program, which combines first-time homeownership classes and counseling from the AHA and financial support in the form of a $5,000 grant from SECURA as a source of down payment monies for qualifying employees.

     “Our employees have expressed much gratitude for this program,” noted Angela Winsor, human resources specialist for SECURA Insurance. “They appreciate the assistance they receive throughout all phases of the home buying process and are always thankful for the financial contribution,” Winsor said.

     According to Kent Gross, AHA Homebuyer Program manager, AHA first-time Homebuyer classes focus on an array of topics, including: homebuyer readiness, money management, understanding credit, obtaining a mortgage loan, protecting your investment and shopping for a home.

     “We help SECURA employees with every step of the process, which can be overwhelming for those who have never established a budgeting plan,” Gross said.  He continued, noting, “That process includes learning about credit scores and how they can be improved, different types of budgeting, payments, interest rates, the process of working with a realtor and more.  We want to empower them so that they feel in control of the steps they need to take.”

     SECURA currently has  four employees participating in the EAH Program, according to Winsor and both current and past employee participants have noted how the knowledge they received by attending AHA first-time Homebuyer Classes empowered them to continue their first-time homebuyer experience.  “The classes give them a better understanding of what lies ahead in the home buying process and all of the paperwork that goes with it so they are more equipped to make decisions that will yield favorable results,” Winsor said.

About National Homeownership Month:

National Homeownership Month started as a week-long celebration of homeownership during the Clinton Presidential Administration in 1995. In 2002, President George W. Bush proclaimed June as the National Homeownership Month. Here is an excerpt from his proclamation:
