‘Help for the Homeless’ Hygiene Drive Kicks off Feb. 21!

82 Local Crisis Agencies to Benefit from Hygiene & Cleaning Product Donations

Published Tuesday, February 16, 2016

APPLETON, GREEN BAY, WAUSAU/STEVENS POINT,  WI –91.9/91.5/88.5 The Family:  The Family radio networks’ 24TH annual ‘Help for the Homeless’ hygiene drive, Feb. 21 – March 13, will collect new toiletry and cleaning products for 82 Wisconsin crisis agencies in 14 Northeast and Central Wisconsin communities.  People are encouraged to donate hygiene items at Festival Foods, Shopko and Walgreens stores.  More than 800 area businesses, churches, and schools will be collecting internally from staff, members and students as well.

“About 75% of the homeless people that come here do not have ANY hygiene products. When they see that we are giving them their own ‘new’ deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, razors, etc., I can see the gratitude in their eyes. Most of them are shocked...some shed a tear. Many may take for having these items granted, but when you are homeless and get something new that lifts your self-esteem and improves your appearance for job interviews, it is priceless! Thank you for thinking of our homeless residents.” Transitional Home Manager

Help for the Homeless works together with area homeless coalitions and crisis programs to provide supplies such as laundry soap, hair and dental care items, deodorant, diapers, and other personal care and cleaning products so that the agencies can dedicate their limited financial resources to providing qualified personnel, education, counseling, safe housing, and nutritious food to those they serve. Note: Food Share (formerly Food Stamps) can only be used to buy food – nothing else. Not soap, diapers or toothpaste.

Communities have donated $1.7 million dollars’ worth of hygiene items to their local crisis programs through The Family’s Help for the Homeless hygiene drive since 2008. The goal of the drive is to supply a year’s worth of products to each agency. Donations remain in the communities where they’re collected.
